Although, as I mention in my Grade 6 iBook, you can use preview to convert filetypes:

If you have a number of files to convert. Another way to convert them is through a folder action. Create a new folder. Control click for the contextual menu and select Folder Action Setup.
From the next menu select the type of conversion that you want to happen. In my example any image dropped on the folder will be converted to a jpeg. When you drag a group of files into the folder you will see a spinning gear in the Menu Bar indicating the action is working.
When done you will see two folders one with the originals and one with the converted files. A quick way to convert lots of files.
